Workshop on Green and Environmental Computing

e-InfraNet held a workshop on Green and Environmental Computing in Helsinki (Espoo) on Wednesday 27th- Thursday 28th October 2010.Over the past few years, Green ICT has become a hot topic and is today at the heart of Europe’s efforts to tackle the problems of climate change and global warming. Although the reflections on Green ICT were originally limited to reducing the environmental impact of ICT products and devices – the “ICT carbon footprint” – it is now recognized that ICT can also have a major environmental impact by enabling energy efficiencies in other sectors.
This eInfranet workshop addressed both sides of the challenge and presented some of the most original projects and initiatives in the field, from the development of greener computers, data centers, and networks, to the use of the enabling effect of ICT in higher education, government and industry. It also reviewed the EU and Members States’ green strategies and policies with keynotes from EC and eInfranet partners’ government representatives.
